N April, Mr. Irving addressed a letterto Charles Dickens, expressing his^ heart-felt delight in his writings, andhis yearnings toward himself. Hehad never seen the glorious fel-low, as he styles him at the time,for he was yet in his minority whenhe left England, but he had read hisproductions with warm admirationas they had since appeared, and onthe perusal of one of them he couldno longer repress his desire to testifyto the author his delighted interestin the story and his high appreciation of his genius. I have notthe letter, but the following is Dickenss glowing reply : — My Dear Sir : — There is no man in the world who could have given me the heart-feltpleasure you have, by your kind note of the 13th of last month.
