termined. By the side of it rose thetemple of Castor and Pollux, of which three Korinthian columns,connected by a richly ornamented architrave, are still standingerect. It was devoted to the memory of the victory near theKegillus Lake (b.c. 485), but was most likely burnt downtogether with the Basilica Julia in its vicinity. Tiberius rebuiltit a.d. 6. The excavations, begun in October, 1871, have alreadylaid open three sides of the building, the pavement of which lies10 metres below the surface of the modern street. The above-mentioned Basilica Julia (C) was separated from this buildingonly by a street; its substructure has been laid open in its fulllength. After it follows the temple of Saturn, the cerarium orpublic treasury (D), eight granite columns of which (six belongingto the frontage, the two others to the two long sides), with thearchitrave resting on them, are still in existence. The firsterection of this temple dates back to early republican times; it 416 THE FORUM ROMA NUM.

The north-western side of the Forum was bounded by fourbuildings, viz. the porticus of the Dii Consentes (E), the templeof Yespasian (F, formerly called temple of Jupiter Tonans), thetemple of Concordia (H, see also Fig. 334), and, towering abovethem all, the Tabularium (Gr) already mentioned. The porticusof the advice-giving gods (Dii Consentes), or twelve chief Romandeities, has been partly restored in modern times with the aid ofexcavated fragments of antique columns and architraves. Thestatues of the gods stood, most likely, in front of, or between, thecolumns. Of the temple built by Vespasian in honour of Domi-tian (a prostylos hexastylos), three Korinthian columns with theirbeams are still standing.
