Above the first liesa second lower story, the architectural arrangements of whichmay be recognised from Adlers ingenious attempt at reconstruc-tion (see Fig. 344). Its original decoration consisted of tablets y 2 3?4 TEMPLE-ENCL OSURES. of coloured marble, the effect being similar to that of a sequence ofnarrow pilasters. This original decoration has later been changedfor another. Above the chief cornice which crowns this story, andat the same time terminates the circular walls, rises the cupola,divided into five stripes, each of which contains twenty-five caskets beautifully worked and in excellent perspective. Inthe centre at the top is an opening, forty feet in diameter, throughwhich the light enters the building. Near this opening a frag-ment has been preserved of the bronze ornamentation which onceseems to have covered the whole cupola. Even without these

The temple-enclosures of the Romans were, as a rule, stillmore splendid than the periboloi of the Greeks. Although fewin number, the remaining specimens of these surrounding courtsare sufficient to give us a distinct idea of the whole arrangement.The original purpose of these courts was to seclude the sanctuaryfrom the profane bustle of the world, for which purpose theenclosure of the space immediately in front of the temple wassufficient. Several enclosures of this kind have been preservedat Pompeii.
