O U 292 SEQUELAE, COMPLICATIONS, AND PROGNOSIS OF MALARIAL FEVERS. patient was convalescent when I lost sight of him, but I have since learned thathe died of pneumonia several weeks later. This case is of especial interestbecause the type of malaria present was the quartan variety, a form very rareeven in malarial localities in the United States. The two following cases of combined typhoid and aestivo-autumnal ma-larial fever are fairly typical of such infections and occurred in soldiers of theU. S. Army. Case I.—S. J. Colored. Was admitted to the hospital suffering fromtyphoid fever and presenting the usual signs and symptoms of that disease.Date of admission, March 16, 1899. Had been sick for two weeks before ad-mission, but had had no chills. Upon the seventeenth of March he had a chilland his temperature rose to 104.4° F. He suffered from headache, backache,and nausea. Physical examination showed an enlarged spleen; tender abdomen;hot, dry skin; and suffused and brilliant eyes.
