1880.) MADRAS ENGINEERS. 525 In his report Major Shaw brought prominently to notice theexcellent and hard work done by the Sappers. It was intended, shortly after this, to send an expeditionagainst the Shinwarries, under General Bright, and the C Com-pany was to have formed part of the force. The Sappers were in high spirits at the idea of seeing somereal fighting at last, after so many months of nothing but hardwork ; but their hopes were doomed to disappointment, for theexpedition never came off, and orders instead were received forthe company to march to India with the 5th Fusiliers and the9th B. N. I. After waiting a few days at Peshawur the C Company wasjoined by the A and I Companies, and the three companies, with150 of the 1st M. N. I., the whole under the command of Lieu-tenant Dorward, were ordered to march to Hassan Abdal, viaKohat. This long and difficult march (twenty-three miles), throughthe Kohat pass, proved very trying to the men in their weakenedstate, and great delay
