HABEAS ENGINEEES. 485 On 19th January a party of fifty Malays murdered a Malaypoliceman and an officers servant who were proceeding fromQualla Kangsa to Campong Baia. Meanwhile the C Company Madras Sappers (LieutenantHewlett), under Lieutenant Hares (R.E.) directions, hadbegun to form a road up the right bank of the Perak river toKota Lama. The working-party was covered by fifteen of the1st Goorkhas. On one day a party of Malays advanced to within fifteenyards of the working-party, and wounded a havildar of Sappersand a Goorkha. The Goorkhas returned their fire, but theMalays escaped into the jungle. Another attack was now planned on Kota Lama, from whichplace these Malays had come. On 28th January it was carried out successfully. The troopsburnt the remaining parts of the town and returned to QuallaKangsa. A strong stockade was then built at Kota Lama.
