erior descending fasciculi of the longuscolli ))osticus. 136. The interarticulares represent another deep-seated series of intervertebral muscles. Examining themupon either side, we find that they start as a well-deve-loped muscle extending between the postzygapophysisof the axis to the hinder margin of the ring of theatlas. Then in general throughout the vertebral column, they occur as muscular bands extending from thepostzygapophysis of one vertebra to the same processesof the vertebra next beyond. In old and muscularsubjects, however, we often see, l^etween the fifth Tntertransversails cervicis. Meckel, System, p. 294, No. 4. Obliquus colli. Owen, Apteryx, p. 282. Verts., vol. ii., p. 89).I question whether his obliquus colli represents the mm. intertrans-versarii of Gadow.—R. W. S.

Owen is of the opinion that this series of musclesin the Aj^teryx are the direct continuation of theohliquo-spinales of the back, in that bird. 137. The ohliquo-transversales are absent in the dorsalregion of the back in the Corvidce and our presentsul)ject. The Aptcryx possesses them, where they appear to be a continuation of the multijidus spincBin the neck (Owen). In the Raven they are best studied as they connectthe ultimate cervical vertel^rse, say the ninth to thetwelfth inclusive. Here we find them passing obliquelybetween the transverse process of one vertebra to thepostzygapophysis of the same side of the vertebra nextbeyond but one. They lie external to the short, straight inter-articularcs, l^eing situated more on the sides o
