The Gadwall is an elegant bird about the ordinary fize of theWigeoH;, and is in particular diftiiiguiflied by the chafte variety oftints and markings on its plumage, that of the male bird efpecially.The female is rather more obfcure in colour, and is in particulardeftilute of thofe elegant fcallops, or femi-circular dark lines whichappear confpicuoufly elegant on the neck and breaft of the malebird. This fpecies is found in j^ngland only during the winter months,when the feverity of the feafon compels them to retire fouthward ;their habitation in the fummer being northward as far as Sweden,Ruffia, and Siberia: in the firft of which it is known to breed. Like PLATE CCXXV. Like the reft of this tribe, the haunts of this bird are the fens andmarfties, where it relides among the rufhes. It is an excellent diver,and as it feeds only in the morning and evening it is not oftenfhot. In fome parts of England it is knovin by the local name ofthe Sea Pheafant. Vol. X, D PLATE 226
