duller in colour than the male , and has not the black marks on thefide of the head and throat In fome fpecimens the brown colour ismore intermixed with black, or dark (hades, than our bird; thischange of colour has been often noticed in the Houfe Sparrow,which is fometimes quite black. We muit confider this as a .ocal fpecies ; common in Laneajhire,Lincoln/hire, and York/hire only, n this country. It is very commonin many parts of Europe : in Sieeria it is more common than theHoufe Sparrow, It frequents trees, and, according to Sepp, buildsits neft in a hollow. It is compofed of bents, mixed with feathers ;and contains five eggs of a pale b;own, with fpots of a darker colour. Albin fcarcely knew this fpecies, from which we may infer, thatit has feldom been taken near the metropolis ; he fays, This birddelights in mountainous woody piaes, not frequented.
