rather than choice. Breeding habits: The Guillemot, most familiar ofall our rock fowl, is a resident in our islands, but subjectto much local movement when the breeding season isover. It is gregarious during the nesting season, someof its colonies being densely packed. Where the cliffsare extensive the Guillemots are more scattered, butwhere suitable crags are (g:\\ the birds mass together inenormous numbers, as, for instance, at the Pinnacles onthe Fame Islands. Cliffs with plenty of ledges andhollows are the favourite nesting-places. The bird maydoubtless pair for life, and certain haunts are returnedto year by year. The Guillemot is no nest-builder, nordoes it make provision in any way whatever for thereception of its 0:%^. This is deposited on any suitableledge in any available hollow, where it can be tolerablysafe from rolling over, or the parent bird can find stand-ing room to incubate it. The Guillemot is not verydemonstrative at the breeding-place, usually flying down PLATE X.
