CHAPTER IX THE EBB TIDE Three oclock is the hour when the heaped-up peoplein the lower city begin to move outward again. That isthe time when the exchanges close. No more large opera-tions can be carried on that day — at least not on the ex-changes — and the operators begin to think of going uptown, or out home in New Jersey or Long Island oralong the Sound. It is the turn of the tide, and fromthen until six or seven oclock, the human stream flowsoutward, seeking the places whence it came in the morn-ing. The little men — the book-keepers, clerks, mes-sengers, and office-boys — are usually the last to go. Aday does not mean for them from ten to three; and longafter the presidents, directors, and members of the firmhave disappeared, the window-frames of lights up in thetall buildings show where the clerical force is still at work,straightening out the days books and business.
