During the summer months ittakes no herculean effort to keep the streets decentlyswept; but in winter, with much ice and snow, and alimited and unreliable labor supply, the difficulty isgreatly increased. London or Paris perhaps does thatsort of thing better than New York, because it has betterfacilities for doing it; but, nevertheless. New York is, alltold, the cleaner city. Paris is gray with dust and Londongrimy with soot, but the buildings of New York are asbright almost as the day they were erected. Look up atthe clean walls, windows, and cornices! How newlywashed seem the chimneys, towers, and domes! Theroofs, when you see them from the upper story of somesky-scraper, have a scrubbed look about them; and eventhe trees in the larger parks, for all that pipes are harrying
