lean underfoot. Ina democratic city where the streets belong to everyoneto use and to no one to keep clean, where men traffic andteam and are always in a hurry, it is impossible to preventaccumulations of litter. Stone, brick, cement, terra-cotta — no onecould name or count the hundreds or even thousands ofdifferent tints or shades they show. To the unobservantthe high mass of the Flatiron, the spires of St. PatricksCathedral, and Dianas Tower of the Madison SquareGarden are alike in hues; but neither in local colornor in texture are they the same.
