As half of Benjamins chargeescaped through the touch-hole, the whole volley ofthe musketry preceded the report of the swivel. Onreceiving this united discharge of small-arms, the frontof the flock darted upwards, while at the same instantmyriads of those in the rear rushed with amazingrapidity into their places, so that when the column ofwhite smoke gushed from the mouth of the cannon,an accumulated mass of objects was gliding over itspoint of direction. The roar of the gun echoed alongthe mountains, and died away to the north, like distantthunder, while the whole flock of alarmed birdsseemed, for a moment, thrown into one disorderlyand agitated mass. (Then they collected the deadbirds and everybody joined in the feasting.)

No doubt many who own suchland today have little knowledge of the original ownersof what was mostly a dense forest but little over a hun-dred years ago. Mr. A. B. Mann, whose knowledge of early titles isprobably as good as, any man in the County, has anexemplification of some deeds made in 1796 for 249,000acres in what was then Lycoming county, from WilliamBingham to parties who finally conveyed to John Keat-ing and others, trustees, of which grantees, one wasJohn S.
