ROWS OF FEDERAL ORDNANCE AT THE BROADWAY LANDING DEPOT, 1865 In the background are Parrott and Brooke rifles—the former belonging to the Federal army and the lattercaptured from the Confederates. To the left are lighter field-guns, some rifles, and some smooth-bores.The small, low carriages in front of the field-pieces are for small mortars. Two Rodman smooth-bores arelying dismounted on the ground. There is a marked difference between the heavy Parrott, probably a 100-pounder, in the traveling position on the carriage at the right of the photograph and the howitzer on thesmall carriage alongside. This photograph gi\es some idea of the tremendous output of the Union ordnancedepartment during the latter years of the war. In the year ending Jime 30, 1864, it spent $38,500,000, andthe supplies jjroduced included 1,750 caissons and carriages, 80-2,525 small arms, 8,409,400 pounds of powder,nearly 1,700,000 projectiles for cannon, and nearly 169,500,000 rounds of small-arms ammunition, b
