Thegenerals first move was to make connections with the fleet and its supplies. The country aliout Savannahafforded nothing l>ut rice, which did not satisfy an army thai for a month had been living on pigs, chickens,ami turkeys. Rut the only convenient channel of communication was the Great Ogeechee, guarded bj thefort that had defied the navy for two years. Its storming by Hazen, on December 17th, was welcome toShermans men above most victories. A foraging party had rowed down the river into Ossabaw Sound andmet a steamer coming in, the crew of which said that it was the Nemeha and had Major-General Fosteron hoard. The party answered: Oh, weve not twenty-seven major-generals up at camp. What we wantis hardtack! On December -1st, (he army entered Savannah. Shermans achievement was world-famous.

Byers reckons this famousmilitary operation as beginning with the campaign against Joseph E. Johnston. Shermans forces werecentered at Ringgold, a little south of the point here pictured. The fighting in this campaign was of tiemost picturesque variety. Johnston was a master of defensive warfare. The mountainous nature of thecountry enabled him to entrench his forces at every step. lie could always wait to he attacked, couldalways be sure of having the advantage in position, and could retreat through the passes to a new standbefore the Federal forces could arrive.
