GILLMORE STUDYINGHIS MAP EXPLAINING THE PHOTOGRAPHSON THE PAGES THAT FOLLOW Brigadier-General Quincy Adams Gillmoreis the man who surrounded Charleston witha ring of fire. On the map which he is study-ing the words East Coast, South Carolinaare plainly legible. A glance at the mapto the right will reveal that coast, alongwhich his guns were being pushed when thisphotograph was taken, in 1863. It will alsonvcal the progress illustrated by the suc-cession of photographs following—the grad-ual reduction of Battery Wagner, at thenorth end of Morris Island before Charleston,by a series of parallels. On the facing pageare scenes in Battery Reynolds on the firstparallel and Battery Brown on the second.Then come Batteries Rosecrans and Meadeon the second parallel, shown on successivepages. The Swamp Angel that threwshells five miles into the city of Charlestoncomes next, and then the sap-roller beingpushed forward to the fifth and last parallel,with Battery Chatfield on Cummings Point.On th
