Turning to his friend Parmenio he explained that heworshipped, not the priest, but the name of Jehovah engraved on hisfrontlet; and that he recognized in him a figure that had appeared to himin a vision in Macedonia, and had bidden him to conquer Persia. EnteringJerusalem, he offered sacrifice, and was shown the prophecies of Danielrelating to himself. This account, for whichwe are indebted to Josephus, has been discredited by some of the critics,but is substantiated in so many points by contemporary writers, that it seemsworthy of belief.
