DISPUTED RESULT.—The result of the election, Nov. 7,1876, gave rise to a prolonged dispute which involved manygrave questions of law, and necessitated the raising of a specialtribunal for its final determination. Up to the meeting of Con-gress the condition of affairs was thus : The election returnsshowed that the Republicans carried all the Northern Statesexcept New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Indiana, andthat the Democrats had carried all the Southern States exceptLouisiana, Florida and South Carolina. Owing to lack of faithin the Returning Boards of these three States, the result wasdisputed by the Democrats. Owing to a similar lack of faith inthe methods of the Democrats in those -States, the Republicanswere suspicious of their interference with the Returning Boardcounts and reports.
