Feeding Her Birds* DEFECTIVE VISION DUE TO ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO Whilst it is contended by many observers thatthe use of alcoholic drinks alone rarely producesamblyopia,—defective vision—it must be con-ceded that there are undoubted cases in everymans practice which can only be ascribed toalcoholic effects. Usually such patients give ahistory of the use of tobacco and alcohol jointly,and whilst the real cause of the diminution restswith the excessive use of tobacco, the alcohol,by impairing nutrition, has made the tissues lessresistant and hence an easy prey for the bane-ful poisonous effects of the nicotine on the op-tic nerve. Alcoholic amblyopia manifests itsellby a gradual diminution in vision in both eyes,with impairment of central color vision—red and green being less distinctly seen or evennot at all, white also being not detected.—A.D.
