, and the results are usually more trying to thesystem than a natural delivery. If extreme care is not taken to insureperfect recovery, serious and lasting womb disease is the result. Among the mostcommon generalcauses of miscarriageare, deficient vitalityof the expectant moth-er; sexual indulgenceduring gestation; andany severe shock, ex-posure or great fa-tigue. When a wo-mans system has notsufficient strength tonourish the embryo, and her generative or-gans are not healthfulenough to shield andprotect it, the life-germ is often lostthrough sheer inabil-ity to retain and de-velop it. Or when thesexual indulgence has been excessive, the germs in both male and fe-male become themselves so deteriorated as to lack vitality enough tolive and grow. SIGNS AND PEOGEESS OF PREGNANCY. 371 Unusual exertion, over-fatigue, violent emotion, any severe shockto the nervous system such as a fall, a jar, or having a tooth extracted;exposure to extremes of weather, great worry or privation, prolongedconstipation or diarrhea, or an acute attack of fever, are all causesthat may produce separation of the embryo from its surroundings andits consequent death and expulsion. Women who become pregnantwhile nursing are apt to miscarry, their systems not being equal tothe double strain. The most usual time for miscarriage to occur, is from the eighthto the twelfth week; though it may occur at other times. A miscar-riage before the fourth month is attended with little danger at thetime, but if neglected, may permanently injure the health. SYMPTOMS OF MISCARRIAGE. The first indications are usually a feeling of great lassitude anddepression of spirits, with backache and uneasiness abo
