In fact, whatwere known as Cheviots were in many caseslittle other than crosses. To improve the breed,from about 1850 several enterprising flock-masters devoted years of their lives; out themost famous, as he was the best known, wasJames Brydon (see art. Brydon, James). Thetype of sheep sought by Mr. Brydon was largeand stylish, and his kind were bought by al-most every owner of a Cheviot flock through-out Scotland. However, the testing time camewith some bad seasons, such as 1879, and thelosses among Cheviot sheep were disastrous.As Professor Wallace, in his excellent accountof the Cheviot breed, says (Farm Live Stockof Great Britain, p. 528): In attaining sizeand beauty, Brydon had got on the wrongtack, and had sacrificed hardihood and utility,the two essentials in a mountain sheep, forsale-ring appearance.
