d huge tipsof shale and sandstone are allowed to spreadover the ground, round about the smoky chimneysof the mines. In midland England these tipshave been in recent years planted in someplaces with trees. Carboniferous System 109 The typical succession of strata in SouthWales and south-western England, excludingthe abnormal series in Devonshire (see art.CuLU Measures), is as follows:— Coal Measures Series.Millstone Grit Series. The three lower series are sometimes conveni-ently grouped together as the CarboniferousLimestone Series. As we go northward, grits and sandstones, with some coal seams, become frequent on thelevel of the Upper Limestone Shale, and thisset of beds has received the distinctive name ofthe Yoredale Series. The Pendleside Series ofMessrs. Hind and Howe (Quart. Journ. Geol.Soc. London, 1901, p. 347) covers, however, beds

Carboniferous System.—Distribution of British Coalfields in Lancashire and elsewhere which were pre-viously classed as Yoredales, and the fossils ofthis series are of Upper Carboniferous type.Hence in recent years the base of the UpperCarboniferous sub-system has been shifted downin certain places, and it has been recognizedthat the Yoredale type of rocks may be repeatedin the Upper Carboniferous. It is urged, more-over, that the true Yoredale Series is repre-sented in Lancashire (Pendle Hill, &c.) by theupper part of the Carboniferous Limestone. In-deed it is clear that in adjacent parts of the marine area limestones, sandstones, and shaleswere being deposited simultaneously, producingin our day a great diversity of scenery and soilson the same geological series. The MillstoneGrit was formed as a remarkably extensive shoredeposit throughout the English area. With theepoch of the Coal Measures Series we reachtrue swampy conditions, and even dry laud;and the forests assert themse
