The Beginnings of Assyria.—Among the Semitic tribeswhich occupied Mesopotamia during the early invasions, thatof the Assyrians established itself west of the Tigris riverand north of Babylonia. Their chief city was Ashur, namedafter their tribal god. From Ashur the Assyrians graduallyextended their power eastward across the Tigris river.
