In 1850, soon after the birth of Prince Arthur, Lieutenant Pate, a cox-comb, struck at the Queen with his cane as she was leaving Cambridge House.Her face was bruised, but her bonnet saved her from serious injury. Asusual, the plea of insanity was set up and all the punishment he received wasthe regulation seven years. The principal domestic event of 1851 was the opening of the Great Exhibi-tion in Hyde Park, which proved the beginning of the worlds fairs that havebeen held so many times in different countries The Queen shared with allEngland the sorrow over the death of the Duke of Wellington, which tookplace in 1852. ,

One of his last public acts was to urge Lord Russell to adopt amore friendly attitude toward the United States over the Trent affair. Hislast words to the Queen were, Good little wife, spoken in German. Everyone sympathized with the sovereign, left thus a widow at the age of forty-two.No wife ever mourned more sincerely the death of her husand, and the Queennever fully emerged from the seclusion to which she retired for a time. Shemarried off her children, and gave several hours daily to her official duties; buther grief was too profound ever wholly to leave her. In 1887 occurred the jubilee of the Queens accession to the throne.London swarmed with visitors, and many princes took part in the procession toWestminster Abbey. Ten years later, the celebration of her Diamond Jubileewas still more imposing. On June 21st—the right day being Sunday—theQueen went to St. Pauls in gre
