Although having had novery severe snow storms the present winter, we havehad the sweeper out several times, and did such successfulwork that even our single motors made schedule time. motors can be examined by simply raising a hinged trapdoor which is covered with canvass, treated the same asthe top of the car. The motor is first geared to a looserunning double sprocket placed upon a stationary hang-ing shaft which is securely attached to the diagonal por-tion of the frame and to which the broom is secured bymeans of projecting arms. The broom has a splitsprocket gear in the center, over which the chain fromthe double sprocket passes. Thus, as the broom is raisedand lowered all centers are preserved. The liftingdevice can be seen quite plainly in the cut. On eachaxle is a motor and the two are controlled as in ordinarystreet cars, but the rheostats are placed inside of the caband thus become very good electric heaters. There are

The truck is an ordinary street car truck of 7 footwheel base. On this truck is built a very heavy frame,made of 6x8 Georgia pine, with oak cross ties boltedtogether with S/^ inch Norway iron bolts, running throughthe full width of the frame, having heavy cast iron wash-ers under the head and nut. All the corners are bracedwith heavy boiler steel, and the frame also braced withheavy truss rods as shown in the photograph. The cabis a very neat I2 foot horse car body, overhauled andnicely painted for this special case. The brooms aremade of the best rattan, and each driven by a No. 6Sprague motor, mounted on the platforms and coveredwith a wooden case, made to fit neatly over the entiremotor and gearing, and which can be lifted off by handlesprovided for the purpose, in case any repairs are neededon the motors.
