ported in babbitted boxes, which are attached directly tothe yokes by T bolts, the heads of which are easilyentered into and removed from recesses in lugs cast onthe pulley yokes. Curve pulleys, 24 inches in diameter, 8f^-inch face,with bottom flange, weighing 223 pounds, are generallyspaced with lo-feet centers. The curve pulley is looseon the spindle, or rather on a case hardened sleeve whichcovers the spindle, and can be turned on the spindle, orremoved and replaced when worn. Pit sheaves have trunnion bearings. The two in themain vault are each 12 feet in diameter, and the tailsheave at the terminus, 10 feet. Elevating wheelsare 4 feet in diameter, with removable rims, while thedepression wheels are standard carrier pulleys withheavier spindles. There is a cross-over at each end of the line, of theJohnson Company guarantee work, with Harveyizedsteel at all crosses. Three slot crossings arerequired, supplied by the Johnson Company, one at acrossing of the Seventh street cable line of the Washing-ton & Georgetown Railroad Company, the other two atintersections with lines of the Metropolitan RailroadCompany, which are about to be equipped with theunderground electric system. At the Seventh streetcrossing the Columbia has the under cable. The road crosses four tracks of the Baltimore & OhioRailroad, on crossings made entirely of steel, imbeddedin Portland concrete, which were made by the WeirFrog Company, Cincinnati, and are good specimens. Noother special work or curves is required, except thattracks encircle and enter the car liouse, which are pro-vided with a shallow conduit for the grip, but not for thecable. ROLLING STOCK.
