The Tacoma &Steilacoom Railway Company awarded the contract forthe construction of their road to the Northwest Thomson-Houston Electric Company, of St. Paul, Minn., includingthe grading and laying of the track. The work wasbegun in August, 1890, and was completed and readyfor operation on April i, 1891. The road commences atcorner of K and nth streets, in the city of Tacoma, andruns west and south to the town of Steilacoom, a distanceof 13 miles. The country between the two towns isvery rough and covered with a dense growth of giant firand cedar trees, which had to be cut down for the rightof way and the immense stumps blown out with giantpowder. Hills were cut through in places to a depth of17 feet, and corresponding gullies filled up, and creeks

FOREST SCENE ON THE STEILACOOM ROAD crossed on long trestles making a very e.xpensive road-bed. The track is laid with 40 lb. tee rail on fir ties,hewn from timber cut off right of way. The poles areall of cedar and were cut along the line. Ten miles ofthe road have bracket poles, and the other three in cor-porate limits have cross suspension. Leaving K streetthe car runs west through West Tacoma, a distance of 2miles, to the power house. This section of the city twoyears ago was a forest. Today it is the home of 3,000people, and has 10 miles ofgraded streets, a fine schoolhouse, stores, handsomehouses and water and electriclights. The power stationand car house is a framebuilding on brick foundation,120x125 feet, includingengine and dynamo house,70x70 feet, two stories inheight, the upper stor\ usedby the offices and by theemployes; car barn 55x120feet, with capacity for 15thirty-foot cars, and boilerand fuel room 50x70 feet,the building being wired for50 incandescent lights.
