rical resist-ance of the joints of water and gas pipes and Kdison tubes increaseswith age because of the galvanic action between the metal of thepipes and the lead of the joints, and that the effect of this increasein joint resistance is to cause electrical currents that may flow inthe pipes to shunt around the joints through the surrounding earthor (in water pipes) the enclosed water, and pit the pipes. As a preventive of this destructive action Mr. Knudson pro-jioses to electrically bond the iron pipes and has secured patents onsuch bonds. The bonds arc tinned copper rivets; under the headof the rivet is a washer made of a spiral of copper wire which canreadily be made to conform to the curvature of the pipe. At thebell end the rivet is driven into a hole drilled in the interior of the))ipe, aiul at the spigot end driven in a hole and the end riveted onthe inside of the pipe. One or more pairs of these contacts arc tobe used at each joint. Connection between the rivet contact pieces
