The normal speed is 18 to 25 miles per hour and thestations arc about 2,000 feet apart. The wheels of the motor carsare 33 in. in diameter and the weight of the car about 24 tons. Themotor cars are io^j ft. high and 7 ft. to in. wide, while the totallength between buffers is 41 ft. 7 in. The cars are divided intotwo parts, one for the driver or motorman and the other for thepassengers. The motor cars are arranged for third class passengers

Hiedistance between the transverse girders is about 5 ft., the rise ofthe arch 8 in. and the total width of the subway is 21 ft. 3 in. Watertight asphalt sheathing and cement is used in the trenches, side wallsand ceiling which insures a dry subway. The floor of the tunnelconsists of concrete about 3 ft. thick and the rails have a gage of4 ft. 8 in. Iron pillars are used as supports between the tracks on accountof the width of the tunnel. The underground portion of the linestarts at the west of the city, north of Charlottenburg, near theZoological Garden and terminates at Nollcndorf PI. Electric trainsconsisting of three coaches, the two end ones being equipped withmotors, pass from the underground subway to the elevated structureillustrated herewith. The elevated part of the line is supported on uprights, free toswing, as they arc set in globular foundation shoes.
