Some of the associations in the past, and even some of the recent consoli-dations, have erred in that extreme, so that it will require a strongman to keep what seems a natural tendency in check. TRANSFORMERS. The Manhattan Railway Co., of New York City, has recently, ordered a large number of Westinghouse O. These transformers are of a refa-tively new design and contain a number of new and valuable de-t: ils. One feature of the transformer is the use of a surroundingbody of oil. enclosed in a nulal outer case. This oil is valuableboth as a cooling niedinin :ind because it increases botli the life

D.transformer has been given a considerable range of e. m. p. bywinding it for two primary and three secondary voltages. Indi-vidual sections of the windings are supplied with terminal con-tacts which by a simple change of connections gise a range ofvoltage covering all practical reiiuirements. The secondary coils for all transformers are wound with copperof square cross-section, which gives about 30 per cent more avail-.ible cross-section than similar coils wound with round copper, llnis reducing the loss due to the resistance of the windings.iMery transformer before leaving the factory is run at overloadwith the noriii.il poleiitial. at three times the normal voltage with-out load, and iiisiilaiion tests are made at voltages ranging fromlour to eiKht tlioiis, iiirl. .Subsequently the coils are immersed in1 il, which gre.-itly increases their insulation resistance. c ■ » Foreclosure pro
