The accompanying map shows in outline the extent of the vari-ous routes in the city. Besides the streets previously occupied thir-teen additional streets were laid out w^ith track. The whole system is found in large quantities in the fissures of the coral rock, andused for condensing purposes. Above the concrete foundationsthere has been erected a steel structure, carrying a traveling cranecapable of easily handling 45 tons. This crane is operated withelectric motors.

The work on the power house and tracks was fairly started inJune, 1900, and was carried on continuously until the first linewas opened to the public. Mar. 21, 1901. The roof, of a novel construction,is of iron and concrete, and provides for complete ventilation ofthe engine room.
