They all cleared. 283 HEARD HIS FATHERS VOICE. TRUE stories are always the best ones. Some of thebest stories moreover are furnished by street rail-way people. The following is both true and astreet railway narrative: The street cars in Galesburg have always been hurledalong at the dizzy speed of 3 miles an hour by mules,although the company have decided now to let the mulego for good and put in electric power instead. Soon after the Opera House in that citj^ was opened acompany played several heavy pieces, and one night thehouse was packed to listen to Hamlet. Everything wentas merrily as things ever go in tragedies until the ghostscene came on with a Manitoba chill to every spine.When Hamlet paused to listen and remark:— Whitherwilt thou lead me ? Speak, Ill go. no farther,—a pin NONE BUT THE BRAVE DESERVE THEFARE.

could have been heard to drop with a dull sickeningthud;—but as Hamlet inclined his head as the last wordpassed his lips as if to catch another message, he wasanswered by a most vociferous reply from the old streetcar mule in waiting at the door below, the effect wasinstantaneous and wonderful. Hamlet turned himself tothe wall to weep, the ghost went out to look for a gun,the audience rolled beneath the chairs, the other mem-bers of the company went into hysterics, and the man-ager of the company vowed he would cancel the balanceof the engagement unless mule blood was shed at once. Even now, when a new company comes that way, theyare unable to account for the uncontrolable and apparentlyunwarranted outburst of hilarity which convulses theaudience when that passage is reached. The aboveoffers one more and heretofore unadvanced evidence as towhy the mule should go.
