The question of overheating is in fact the crux of the Iraclionmotor problem. The motors may exert on test and show on tlirir 60 STREET RAILWAY REVIEW. (Vol. XI. No. i. characteristic curves the necessary combination of speed andtorque, but the proof of a good motor is its capacity to work ata temperature that docs not quickly bring it into the repair shops. It is true that performances are sometimes demanded which areoutside the possibilities of the dimensions available, but on theother hand the influence of good ventilation will often go a longway. The ventilating arrangements on the Brush motors are veryefficient indeed. The upper pole pieces are slotted out from theirface to the outside of the frame and the openings are protectedby a shield and a raised edge. The armature has a ventilatingslot from the shaft to the periphery and air ducts parallel to theshaft supply air at a low speed, which is thrown out at the peri-phery and blown tlirough the pole faces to the outside. The frame is made to open downward, and the armature, by avery simple arrangement shown in our illustrations, can be loweredwith the bottom half, or left suspended in the top half, as may beconvenient. Another feature of the motors is the application of automaticoil ring lubrication. This improvement is of the utmost importancein keeping down the cost of repairs and renewals. The life of thebearings is increased from three to four times that which is usualwith grease lubrication, and the efifect on the wear of the gearwheels is almost equally marked. The reason for this is oftenoverlooked, which is that any wear in the motor axle bearingsleads to a displacement of the gear pitch circles and a correspond-ing increase of wear and
