the labor of caringfor boilers is greatly increased. All hoppers are sealed from airdrafts by valves and back draft of air is kept from reaching theash pit and thence from going into furnace along face of bridgewall and through the slot between grate and wall liy a drop damperhung from the grate frame in such a position as lo force all airup through the bed of coal. Coal siftings from the upper boilers arc discharged into the lowerhoppers and fed direct into the lower stokers, and those from thelower boilers chute directly to the conveyor. All ashes fall direct to the conveyor through cast iron spoutsfrom the ash storage hoppers under each boiler, which latter havea capacity sufficient for one-half days run on the upper floor andone days on the lower. Ashes are not allowed to collect in thespouts or to become wet.
