tries, Gait having longbeen known as the Manchester of Canada, while thelarge industries of Preston and Hespeler are exceedingly with the Canadian Pacific Railway to carry freight andpassengers for them, and in the spring of 1894 contractswere let to build this portion of the road. The trackwas laid with 56 pound T rails; ties of cedar and tama-rack spaced 2 feet between centers, and everything donein a most substantial manner. At the Canadian PacificRailway station in Gait our tracks were connected byswitches with the tracks of that railway, and in additionto this sidings were put into every factory 3ard in Pres-ton, thus enabling the manufacturers to load and unloadtheir freight at their own doors. The switches used areordinary railwaj switches with signals, etc. The roadwas then equipped with ordinary trolley cars as well ascars with a compartment for baggage and express goods.The company also purchased a light Baldwin locomotive,for heavy freight service. Gait is sup-plied with good steam railway facilities, being on the mainline of the Canadian Pacific Railway and also havingtwo branches of the Grand Trunk Railway. The town ofPreston is about three miles from Gait and Hespeler isabout 3 miles from Preston, and while the Grand TrunkRailway runs through both these towns they have noconnection with the Canadian Pacific Railway. Therehas always been a large amount of business intercoursebetween the three towns and in consequence of this andthe fact that the facilities for traveling between the townswere very poor, the idea of connecting them by means ofa trolley line was introduced a couple of years ago. Acompany was accordingly formed and the affair tookdefinite shape. It was decided to first build the roadbetween Gait and Preston. Franchises were procuredfrom the various municipalities
