Text Appearing Before Image:
inCffiHH 76 NORCROSS SLAB The number and arrangement of the reinforcing rods in theNorcross experimental slab, (eleven 3/8 round rods in each sideand diagonal belt) is clearly shown in the view of Oct. 31st, Fig. 7, whichshows the forms ready for pouring the concrete. Steel plates20 X 20 X 0.5 carry the rods and rest on the tops of the columns, which last in this case consisted of steel pipes about 5^ in dia-meter filled with concrete and embedded at their lower ends in largeconcrete blocks. A vertical central bolt in the concrete at theupper end of each pipe permitted the plates to be firmly secured tothe tops of the columns. The view of Nov. 30th, Fig. 8, clearlyshows the manner of placing the pig iron on the slab for load 3.This slab is 16 x 16. The loading at first covered an area havingthe form of a Greek cross whose central square was five feet on aside with arms 5 6 long, as represented in accompanying diagramof loaded areas A, B, C, D, E, Fig. 9, and of amounts shown inTable 1.
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 10. Collapse of Norcross Slab When 10,000 pounds had been piled on the central part of theslab in addition to load No. 4, of 66,812 pounds, the slab suddenlyfailed. In anticipation of such failure timber blocking had beenplaced under the slab to prevent its falling more than possibly tenor twelve inches. NORCROSS TEST 77
