ter of the old barn abroad sunbeam entered. It left a long bar of 296 WILD DWELLERS OF light through the dimness of the dusky place. The barn was strangely silent, hushed, butmany bright eyes had witnessed the tragedy andwere watching to see the end, but all that theyfinally saw was just a few wisps of white fur, which came floating lazily down through thebar of light. His eyes sparkled mali-ciously and cunningly as he made sure that itactually was Moween herself. Then he knewshe had come straight from her den up on Por-cupine Ridge to forage for food, because downbelow, on the needle-strewn floor of the forest,Moween knew she could find plenty of prey forthe taking. Close hidden beneath the low-hanging branches of the spruce bush, she some- 299 300 WILD DWELLERS OF times came across a frightened par
