r black snout cautiously through thedried ferns to make sure no hidden foe lay inambush ; then she marshaled her family behindher, uttering a series of reassuring squeaks, andthey followed her down to the deep pool. Mrs. White-Spot took up her position upon alarge flat stone, just at the edge of the pool, andthen went about teaching the little skunks howto take a bath. First she urged them all toventure out upon the flat stone, then, as oneafter another of the little skunk children fol-lowed her, she suddenly pushed each one ofthem with her snout off into the deep water ofthe pool. At first they did not care for the wetting, andbegan to set up little protesting squeaks of ter-ror, trying to scramble back again to the stone.But no sooner did they emerge from the waterthan, firmly, but gently, their mother pushedeach one back into the pool again. Head overheels they went with a splash and a squeak.But finally when they had become quite accus-tomed to the water, they began to enjoy them-

Now Mrs. White-Spot was very proud of herlittle family, for they were as fine and hand-some a litter of baby skunks as one might wishto see. They resembled their mother verymuch, and she was a beautiful creature, justabout the size of the large family cat, with fursoft and fine, jet black, and so long that whenthe wind blew across her back it waved andundulated like a field of grain, with everymotion of her body; and straight from the tipof her dainty, pointed nose, right across herback, ran a patch of pure, snow-white fur, end-ing at the tip of her tail, which looked preciselylike a great soft black plume. Mrs. White-Spot was so very much taken upgiving her children a proper bath that she didnot see that some one was eagerly watching herfrom behind a screen of alders.
