So theyskinned the dead catamount, and the next morn-ing, as soon as the first yellow rays of the risingsun touched the top of Mount Horrid, Fredloaded with the rabbits, and Tom with the rifleover one shoulder and the tawny hide of thecatamount draped proudly over the other,tramped back over the Ridge to the homecamp, displaying to admiring eyes the largestcatamount pelt ever seen on the mountain.

VII THE CALL OF THE MOOSE THROUGHOUT the dense forests of thegreat Northland the call of the moose isheard late in April, when the herd leave theirwinter quarters or yard to strike forth withtheir families into the broader, more opencountry. Monsall, the old King Moose of the sprucewood, had once more taken his proper place asleader of his own family. All through themonth of March he had been quite contentwith his lot, and as timorous and helpless asany cow moose in the herd. This was simplybecause it was the season of shedding; his greatbranching horns were gone, and the newlysprouting ones were still in their velvetstage, so that they would have been of no pos-sible service to Monsall in battle. But now his horns were gradually hardening,and with the return of his shorn strength allthe bold, domineering nature of the King hadreturned to him, and he was glad. Ugh-ugh-waugh, o-o, he called to his mate91 92 WILD DWELLERS OF loudly and commandingly, and with his heavyantlers held proud
