that on December 8 of the present yearthose quarters of the globe will be thickly studdedwith emissaries from so many nations to observe animportant astronomical phenomenon. It will be well to conclude this account witha statement of the arrangements which have beenmade as to observers on the British expeditions.It is extracted from instructions published underauthority :— Appointments of Observers to the several Districtsof Observation, and Subordination of Observers. 1. Capt. G. L. Tupmari, R.M.A., is head of theentire enterprise, and is responsible through theAstronomer Royal to the Government for everypart. Every observer is responsible to Capt.Tupman. 2. When the different expeditions are separated,the observers in each district of observation are re-sponsible to the local chief of the district, and thechief to the Astronomer Royal. The districts ofobservation and the observers will be the following,the name first following that of the local chief being THE TRANSIT OF VENUS. 97
