THE MONTEREY CYPRESS (Cupressus macrocarpa) A small remnant of their race are the aged, flat-topped veteran cypresses that cling with gnarled and far-reaching rootsto the crumbling soil of rocky promontories about Monterey Bay in California. The leaves are minute, but the foliage mass isthick and casts a sombre shade. In cultivation the species thrives, and makes a beautiful hedge tree and ornamental evergreen
