That comradeship between the different armswhich has brought homogeneity, took a longtime to establish. The infantry officers, by theircruel sufferings and their heavy losses, weresorely embittered against the officers of theother arms who suffered less than they. Whenanything went wrong in one sector, they had atendency to say that the artillerymen and theaviators had not done everything possible andhad lost interest in them. In the same way theartillerymen and the aviators, at some dis-tance from the first line, did not always ap-preciate the critical conditions in which the in-fantry found themselves and were tempted toconsider them nervous and timorous. 322
