Text Appearing Before Image:
(of plate XIII) represents a handsome smallerchipped celt of Xcolithic date, slightly dulled at theDroadcr end and along- the long edges. It is of darkblue-gray chert and free from weathering effects. Be-tween this and that first mentioned (5792) is a widegap. but it is filled by examples which by slight vari-ations show the lineal descent of one from the other. The purpose of the celt which dates from EarlyNeolithic time was not that of the Neolithic celt, whichis somctinies given the nanic inif/roor-fl <i.r. It showsno evidence of having been used as an ax or hammer,it is never grooved, nor notched, as if it had been at-tached to a haft or handle. It is usually not l)atteredby use at either end. and if so battered at all it appearsto have been accidental, or subsidiary to that whichis seen on the long cflgcs. The long edges are some-times so rounded by use that all semblance of anedge is lost. It is on such specimens that can be THK WEATHERING OP STONE ARTIFACTS. MINN. HIST. SOC.
