so heldthat the bag and the tops of the water columns areon the same level; the corset is closed and thepressure is indicated by the rise of the mercury asregistered on the sliding scale of the tube. Thepressure of the corset on each square inch is founedby shifting the bag about under the corset. Thesum of the pressure in various areas gives the totalamount. The least pressure which Dr. Dickinsonhas estimated from a corset is 21 pounds; thegreatest pressure he has found is 88 pounds. Thepressure of a loose corset is about 35 pounds. It would be difficult to find a woman strongenough to lift, even for a moment, a weight of 88pounds. A sack of flour weighs 25 pounds—10pounds less than the pressure of the loosest corset.How many women can carry a sack of flour? Yethere we have a constant pressure upon the vitalorgans of a weight which cannot be borne by thearms. Dr. Dickinson observes that the thoracic oavitysuffers less diminution in size and alteration in 36 THE WELL-DRESSED WOMAN.
