THE REPUBLIC OF PANAMAWhen a province of Colombia it was considered a part of Soutli America,state it prefers to be classed with North American countries. As an independent in the province of Bocas del Toro covering about35,000 acres. Cocoanuts, coffee, tobacco, ivorynuts, sweet potatoes, cacao, cereals and sugarcane are other cultivated products. In theforests are found palms and rubber trees; hardwoods like the mahogany, cedar and rosewood;sarsaparilla, copaiba and other medicinal plants,and various dyewoods. There are valuablepearl fisheries along the coasts of the PearlIslands, in the Gulf of Panama. The isthmuscontains deposits of gold, copper, iron and salt,but the mines are as yet in an undevelopedstate. Government. Panama is governed under aconstitution adopted on February 13, 1904, andmodeled after that of the United States.
