They would comebefore her shoal, swim, dive, give snorts or grunts,telling her how much they loved her; but Papa andMamma Ngooboo watched her carefully when shewould go out to swim and would themselves swim be-tween her and her two admirers. She was too youngyet, the old folks thought, to be taken away from them. Day after day her two admirers would display them-selves before her, show her how they could dive andswim, each trying to surpass the other in these accom-plishments. Miss Ngooboo looked at them com-placently, enjoying the fun. But before very long thetwo admirers began to be very jealous of each other,and uttering grunts of defiance and hatred, daredeach other to a fight. When they came togetherin swimming they would look at each other fiercelyand say, If you do not stop coming, I will giveyou a trouncing. I dare you, would answer theother. So the days passed. ii6

)htH t/isittii a tcrribLCpgit A FIGHT FOR MISS NGOOBOO One day Miss Ngooboo seemed to show preterencefor the one whose shoal was the nearest to hers. Therejected rival became furious. He shouted with ter-rific and angry snorts that Miss Ngooboo was tobe his, and that he would fight for possession ofher. The other said he would do likewise, for shewas to be his. Both went back to their shoals full offight and hating each other more than ever. The next day, as Miss Ngooboo was on her shoalby the side of her mamma and papa, the young ngoobooadmirer that was her neighbor left his shoal and swamtoward her. When his rival, who was watching him with jealouseyes, saw this, he left his shoal and swam toward heralso, with fight in his eyes. He had made up his mindto settle the quarrel that day ngooboo fashion, and de-cide by single combat to which of the two rivals MissNgooboo was to belong. He was very sly and swamunder the water.
