s Harry, and therefore had not seen the scar. SAMS FIGHT WITH A BEAR. 87 Well, continued Jack, that scar was received in a fight with a bearfour or five years ago, about twenty miles from here. Sam—his nameis Sam Brown—was out with a friend, when they came upon a couple ofbears, and so suddenly that they were not ten yards off when they sawthem. They drew their hunting-knives to defend themselves; but Samsfriend did not stay long: he ran over the hill as fast as he could go, andleft Sam to fight it out alone. lie killed the bear, but he had a terrible struggle before he succeeded. His arms and sides were torn and bitten, and his face was scratched whereyou saw the scar. The mark on his face is nothing compared with thosewhere the other wounds were made, and since that time Sam says he doesnot want to fight a bear with a hunting-knife unless the bear is deadfirst.
