HOW THE SEALS ARE KILLED. 285 But the seals have had time to cool, and now we will see how theyare killed. A dozen or fifteen men attend to this work, and they havesome long, heavy clubs that require strong arms to wield them. Theywork under the direction of an overseer, who selects the seals to beslaughtered, and allows all those that are too young, or are not in goodcondition, to escape. From fifty to a hundred seals are taken from theherd and driven a little to one side, and then the men surround themand make them huddle into a heap with their heads in the air. A sin-gle well-directed blow finishes the seal, as it crushes the skull and killshim instantly. When three or four hundred have been killed, the work is stoppedso that the skins may be removed. This must be done very promptly,

KILLING FUR-SKALS. as the bodies of the animals begin to decay in a few hours, especially ifthe weather is at all warm, and the least decay is an injury to the skin. The men, from long practice, are very expert at skinning seals, andsome of them will remove a pelt from the body of a medium-sized animalinside of two minutes.
