SANDY HOOK. OCEAN SCENE NEAR SANDY HOOK. 133 Outside the Hook they met a large steamer going in, and a few minuteslater another passed them on her way to Europe. Half a dozen sailingships were in sight at once, some with all their sails spread to the breeze,while others had only canvas enough set to keep them in motion. Therewere many fishing and pleasure boats darting here and there, and theLotos went within a few yards of one on which a party was endeavoringto have a good time and catch some blue-fish. They were sailing alongat a fine rate, and had several lines trailing over thestern of their craft.George thought they were too closely packed for comfort, as there wereeight or nine of them, besides the man at the helm. Three women wereof the party; two were not feeling particularly well, and wanted to gohome, but the third was fishing away as merrily as the best of the men,and enjoying the fun.
