One was fast to a whalethat had sounded, or gone down toward the bottom and drawn the lineafter him, and the six men in the boat were all occupied in tending theline, to see that he did not take out too much of it. Another boat hadjust struck a whale that was making off like a race-horse, and towing histormentors as though it was fun for him to exercise his strength in thatway; while the third boat, which came from the distant ship, was furlingits sail and getting ready for work. The men were at the oars, and therewas a good prospect that within the next live minutes another whalewould feel the prick of the harpoon.
